John Smoltz retired 12 batters on strikeouts as the Iowa MoonlightGraham
defeated the Michigan Timbers by a score of 6 to 2 at Jacob's
Field.
Smoltz(1-0) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He gave up just 5 hits
and 1 walk in 7 and 2/3 innings. Iowa out-hit Michigan for the game, 13 hits
to 7.
The loss was charged to Justin Thompson(0-1). He gave up 5 runs in 4 innings
of work. Smoltz was jubilant in the hometown clubhouse, 'It was a lot of fun
out there. The fans gave me a lot of support as did my teammates. We got
the victory and I'll sure take 12 strikeouts anytime!'
