Left fielder Pete Rose had 4 hits as the Detroit Polecats staged a dramatic
comeback over the Zygton Zabra by a score of 7 to 6 at Fulton
County.
Detroit came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs using
2 hits. After an out was recorded, Jerry Grote got things going when he drew
a walk. Bake McBride stepped up to the plate and he delivered a base-hit. A
balk was called. Jorge Orta was up next and he was walked intentionally to
load the bases. Steve Braun came up to bat and drew a walk plating a run.
Darrell Porter did his part to keep things going and hit a deep fly plating
one more runner. Rose followed next and he drew a walk to load the bases.
Al Oliver then ripped a single making Detroit the winners and sending the
48,001 fans home happy. Detroit had 11 hits for the night.
The winning pitcher was Dave Goltz(2-1) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.
Rollie Fingers(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. 'Now there is a lesson
in perseverance for you,' Rose noted. 'It was looking pretty dim there for a
while, but we just kept plugging away and it really paid off in spades! And
it was great to see the crowd go crazy there at the end!'
