Mel Parnell had a complete game as the Bristol Blasters came back to win one
over Iowa MoonlightGraham, 5 to 4.
Bristol came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning with 3 runs
on 2 hits. Milt Smith opened up the inning nicely when he smacked a single.
Smith swiped second base. Joe Garagiola then drew a walk. Lloyd Merriman
was up next and he doubled knocking in a run. One out later, Phil Rizzuto
was next to bat, but he was a strikeout victim. Vic Wertz did his part to
keep things going and drew a walk to load the bases. Gil Hodges was next and
he drew a walk plating one more runner. Sherry Robertson then drew a walk
making Bristol victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. Bristol
had a total of 9 hits for the game.
Parnell(9-8) lasted until the end allowing 4 runs for the win. Mike
Garcia(2-3) was hit with the loss in relief. Bristol knocked him around a
bit, as he gave up 3 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.
'We just wouldn't give up,' Merriman said. 'Much of the credit goes to our
fans - they were with us the whole way.'
