In a dramatic ending the Savannah Rumrunners staged a comeback and held on to
win over the Pinch Quicks by the count of 4 to 3.
Savannah scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning with 3 runs
on 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Curley Williams started the attack as
he reached on an error. After another out, Bud Stewart stepped in and he
laced a one-base hit. Cass Michaels then tripled scoring two baserunners.
Bobby Thomson followed and he drew a walk. Stan Musial stepped into the box
and doubled scoring the final run of the inning. Leon Day pitched a perfect
ninth and was credited with his 13th save.
The winning pitcher was Steve Gromek(6-1) who allowed no runs in 2/3 of an
inning. Roberto Vargas(2-2) was the loser in relief. After the game, it took
a long while before Crack Rock Johnson emerged from his office. In a subdued
tone he answered only a couple of questions. He concluded with, 'Fellows,
sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this afternoon, as I think you'll
understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more light-hearted over in
the Savannah locker room.'
