WEB GEMS- Top 5th: Ernie Banks robbed Dick Howser of a base hit.
In a tight game it was the Pittsburgh Bichipoos 5, the Bristol Blasters 3 at
Fenway Park.
Bristol found themselves trailing quickly as the Pittsburgh bats came through
in the first inning when they scored 3 runs on 3 hits. The critical plate
appearance was by Steve Bilko who helped quiet the crowd when he popped a
two-run clout over the fence. Bristol tried unsuccessfully to come back in
the 9th.
The win was credited to Jim Archer(7-4) who went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing no
runs. Jack Kralick(3-10) was charged with the loss. Pittsburgh's manager was
in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we could win all
of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not going to happen,
I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'
