At The Cornfield, the Iowa faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's
duel. Slats Newkirk(4-4) finally bested his The Little counterpart, Hank
Miller(6-2), by the score of 3 to 1.
Newkirk was in control of the game from the outset. He allowed only 3 hits
and 5 walks in 8 innings improving his ERA from 3.93 to 3.52. Iowa managed
only 5 hits on the night.
Bobby Shantz recorded the save, his 3rd. Miller ended up with the loss. He
was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his 8 innings
of work.
