The hometown crowd was rewarded with a dramatic ending, as the Pittsburgh
Bichipoos staged a comeback win over the lifeless Sterling Silver Sluggers by
the count of 4 to 3.
Pittsburgh had the winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs utilizing 3
base hits. Buddy Blattner led off and started the rally when he stroked a
one-base hit, and an error was also committed. Joe Gordon next to the plate
and he drew a walk. Joe B. Scott then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Cliff
Mapes followed and he delivered a single scoring a run. Sid Hudson came up
to bat and worked the squeeze play to perfection bringing in another run.
Eddie Kazak continued the rally and drew a walk. Sam Hairston stepped into
the batter's box and he stroked a base-hit giving Pittsburgh the victory as
43,959 happy fans celebrated wildly. Pittsburgh managed 8 hits in their
victory.
Al Benton(10-9) was the winner allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Vic
Lombardi(0-4) was hit with the loss in relief. 'What a win!', Benton said.
'These are the kind of games that stand out in your mind at the end of a
season.'
